Kanungu is a town in the hilly southwest of Uganda, in a district that stretches from dense montane forest to open savannah. The town itself sits on uneven ground. On a map its streets are short and irregular, bending to fit the slopes, while the roads leading out of town wind across ridges and down into valleys.
The district includes the Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, known for its mountain gorillas, and the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where lions are sometimes seen resting in trees. Between these protected areas, the hills are divided into small farms and, on some slopes, tea gardens.

Roads from the town wind west and south toward the forest at Buhoma. Their constant bends show how steep and folded the terrain is.
Farmed ridges
Small farm plots and tea gardens cover many of the surrounding hills. They form a fine patchwork across the ridges and valleys on the map.
