Kānūru is part of the Vijayawada urban area in Andhra Pradesh, on the eastern side of the city. From above it is a mix of dense residential colonies, main roads leading into the centre, and pockets of remaining farmland being filled with new housing. Vijayawada's landscape is shaped by the Krishna River and the irrigation canals that fan out from it across the delta.
