Kapurthala was the capital of a princely state in Punjab. The town still shows that past in its layout: large palace compounds, formal gardens and public buildings sit within the ordinary network of streets. It lies on the flat Doaba plain, in fertile farmland, not far from Jalandhar.
Its best-known building is the Jagatjit Palace, built for Maharaja Jagatjit Singh and modelled on French palace architecture, including Versailles. It now houses a Sainik School. The town also has a Moorish Mosque, inspired by the Koutoubia in Marrakesh. Both reflect the ruler's taste for European and North African design.
A Kapurthala Town map poster highlights these open spaces. Palace grounds and gardens appear as calm areas inside a dense grid of streets, clearly visible from above. It suits people from Doaba, alumni of the school and anyone interested in the princely towns of northern India.
The palace and its surrounding gardens take up a large, formal space in the town. On the map, the ordered layout of the grounds stands out from the more irregular streets nearby.
Built in a North African style, the mosque adds a clear, distinct shape to the town plan. It is a notable part of the princely capital's architectural legacy.
Around the town, flat, fertile fields stretch towards other Punjab towns. The map shows Kapurthala as a dense cluster within an orderly agricultural landscape.
