Karachi lies on the Arabian Sea coast, west of the Indus delta, and its shape is set by the sea. A natural harbour is sheltered by the Manora peninsula, with the port at Kiamari on its inner side, while mangrove creeks and backwaters line the shore to the south-east. From the coast, the city spreads north and east across flat ground, bounded by the Lyari River on one side and the Malir River on the other.
The older districts, including Saddar and the area around the port, hold a mix of colonial buildings and dense bazaars. South of them, Clifton and the Defence Housing Authority extend in wide, regular grids toward the sea at Clifton Beach and Sea View. The Mazar-e-Quaid, the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, stands inside a large square garden near the centre.
Karachi was Pakistan’s first capital, from independence in 1947 until the move toward Islamabad began in 1959, and it remains the country’s largest city and main seaport. Jinnah himself was born here. A Karachi map poster shows the relationship between harbour, old town and coastline that has defined the city since it grew into a major port under British rule.
The sheltered harbour between Kiamari and the Manora peninsula forms an irregular, enclosed shape of water, with wharves and channels that give the western part of the map its detail.
Planned neighbourhoods along the southern coast, laid out in broad, orderly grids of avenues and lanes that end at the sea, in contrast with the denser older districts inland.
Jinnah’s mausoleum sits in a large square garden with straight paths, a clean geometric space that stands out clearly among the surrounding streets.
