Karhula is a district of Kotka in southeastern Finland, lying along the eastern branch of the Kymi river a few kilometres inland from the Gulf of Finland. It grew as an industrial centre in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with sawmills, engineering works and a well-known glassworks developing near the rapids.
On a map the river dominates. The Kymi divides into channels around islands, with rapids and dams marking the historic sites of mills. Karhula's streets follow the terrain between the water and the forested rocky ground, and residential areas of detached houses and apartment blocks spread through the pines.
A Karhula map poster shows this Nordic mix of water, industry and forest. The river channels form the main structure, the former mill sites appear as dense clusters near the water, and residential streets wind out among lakes and woodland. It is a quiet, characterful image of Finnish industrial heritage.
The eastern branch of the Kymi divides around islands and rapids, drawing bold curving shapes through the centre of the district.
Former and current industrial areas sit close to the rapids, recognisable by their larger footprints and more regular layouts.
Residential streets wind through forested, rocky ground, creating loose, organic patterns typical of Finnish towns.

Ko e hā ʻa Karhula
For people from Kotka and Karhula, the river and the mills are part of family history. A map of the district is a way to honour that heritage while adding a calm, graphic piece to a Nordic interior.
