Karlstadt lies on the left bank of the Main in Lower Franconia, north of Würzburg. Its old town is one of the clearest examples of a planned medieval town in the region: a near-rectangle of parallel streets, founded by the bishops of Würzburg around 1200 and still largely enclosed by its walls and towers. From above, the regularity is striking.
Across the river, on a wooded hill, stand the ruins of the Karlsburg, a castle older than the town itself. Vineyards cover some of the surrounding slopes, as they do along much of the Main valley, and a large cement works on the edge of town reflects the limestone geology of the area. Railway and roads follow the valley.

The Main river
The Main runs broad and gently curving along one side of the old town. It defines a full edge of the composition and separates the town from the hills opposite.
