Kashgar lies at the far western edge of China, in Xinjiang, where the Taklamakan Desert meets the foothills of the Pamir and Tian Shan ranges. For centuries it was a key junction on the Silk Road, where routes from China, Central Asia and South Asia converged, and the city still sits within a wide irrigated oasis surrounded by dry land.
The old town, centred on the Id Kah Mosque, is a compact maze of narrow lanes and courtyard houses, much of it rebuilt in recent years but still dense and irregular in plan.
