Kathor lies on the Tapi River in the Surat district of Gujarat, upstream from the city of Surat. On a map the river is the defining feature. It sweeps past the town in a broad channel, and the built-up area gathers along its bank, with streets leading away from the water into the surrounding fields.
The layout of the town is compact and informal. Narrow lanes run between closely set houses near the river, and a few main roads carry traffic out toward Surat and the neighbouring villages.
