Kattanam is a town in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, in the low, water-rich country of the state's central coast. From above it does not look like a grid city. Instead, lanes wind between house plots and coconut groves, and they follow old property lines and the gentle slope of the land more than any plan.
The main road through Kattanam links it to nearby towns. Smaller paths leave it in every direction and fork again and again before disappearing into the greenery. On a black-and-white map the result looks like the veins of a leaf, dense near the junctions and thin at the edges.
