Kent lies in Portage County in northeast Ohio, on the Cuyahoga River. On a map, the river runs through the middle of town in a narrow valley, crossed by a few bridges. The small downtown sits beside it, with a grid of short streets. Residential neighbourhoods spread out on either side, in the tree-lined blocks typical of Ohio towns.
East of downtown is the large campus of Kent State University, which dominates the town's shape. The university is also known for the events of May 4, 1970, when Ohio National Guard soldiers shot students during a protest, a moment now commemorated on campus.
