Kerki lies in eastern Turkmenistan, in Lebap Province, on the left bank of the Amu Darya not far from the border with Afghanistan. The river dominates any map of the town. It is wide, braided and shifting, and it passes the town in a broad band of channels and sandbars. For centuries this was an important place to cross the river.
The town was renamed Atamyrat in 1999 and returned to its historic name, Kerki, in 2017. The remains of an old fortress recall its past as a fortified post. Around the centre, a regular grid of streets gives way to irrigated farmland fed by canals, and modern bridges cross the river nearby.
A Kerki map poster is shaped by water in a desert setting. The channels of the Amu Darya, the canals and the geometry of irrigated fields contrast with the dense streets of the town, and dry land lies beyond.
