Khātra is a town in Bankura district in the west of West Bengal, where the plains start to rise toward the Chota Nagpur plateau. On a map it appears as a dense core of narrow lanes around the main roads, surrounded by villages, fields and scattered patches of woodland. The Kangsabati river flows through the wider area, and the landscape grows rougher to the west.
The town is the headquarters of Khatra subdivision, which also takes in Mukutmanipur, where a dam on the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers created one of the largest reservoirs in the state. The region is known for red laterite soils and belongs to the forested belt often called Jungle Mahal.
