Kirkintilloch lies in East Dunbartonshire, a few miles north-east of Glasgow, and water shapes its map. The Forth and Clyde Canal passes through the town, the Luggie Water joins from the south, and the River Kelvin runs along the northern edge through low, often flooded ground. The town has long called itself the canal capital of Scotland.
The town's history goes back much further than the canal. A fort on the Antonine Wall, the Roman frontier built across central Scotland in the second century, stood here, and its site is now a park near the centre. Around it, a mix of older streets, Victorian terraces and postwar estates spreads out over the gentle slopes.
A Kirkintilloch map poster shows these layers: the straight line of the canal, the winding river on the north side, the small historic core and the residential areas around it. The Campsie Fells rise not far to the north, just beyond the frame of a typical town map.
The canal cuts across the town in a long, steady line, with the Luggie aqueduct carrying it over the Luggie Water.
The site of a Roman fort on the Antonine Wall is now a park in the town centre, marking the old imperial frontier.
The Kelvin winds across flat land along the northern edge of the town, adding soft curves next to the straight canal.
