Kitakata lies at the northern end of the Aizu Basin in western Fukushima Prefecture. It is known across Japan for two things: its thick-walled kura storehouses, thousands of which stand throughout the town and surrounding villages, and Kitakata ramen, a soy-based noodle soup considered one of the country's great regional styles.
From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by flat rice fields, with mountains rising around the edge of the basin. The railway runs along one side of the centre, rivers cross the plain from the northern hills, and villages sit scattered among the paddies like small islands.
A Kitakata map poster shows how neatly the town fits into its basin landscape. The dense cluster of streets carries the kura districts and ramen shops, while the fields around it create a wide, quiet frame. It is a clear picture of a historic rural town in northern Japan.
The historic storehouses stand along the older streets of the centre, part of the dense fabric that forms the core of the map.
Rice paddies surround the town on the flat basin floor, giving the poster a wide open area dotted with small farming villages.
Small rivers flow down from the northern mountains across the plain, adding thin natural lines to the geometry of streets and fields.

Ko e hā ʻa Kitakata
Kitakata means a great deal to travellers who came for its ramen and storehouses, and even more to those who grew up among them. The map records the town as a whole, including the fields that shape it.
