Klungkung, whose town is known as Semarapura, lies in eastern Bali between the slopes rising toward Mount Agung and the southern coast. The regency also includes the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan across the strait. On the mainland, the town centre is compact, with a crossroads at its heart and main roads leading toward Gianyar, Karangasem and the coast.
Klungkung was the seat of Bali's most senior royal house. Its best-known landmark is the Kertha Gosa, a pavilion with a painted ceiling in traditional Kamasan style, set in the remaining grounds of the old palace. In 1908 the royal court ended in a puputan, a ritual mass sacrifice in the face of the Dutch army, an event commemorated by a monument in the town.

South of town, the land slopes gently down to the coast. Rivers and roads run toward the sea and the channel facing Nusa Penida.
