Kołobrzeg sits on the Baltic coast of West Pomerania, where the Parsęta river reaches the sea. On a map, the straight line of the shore runs along the top of the frame, backed by a wide belt of spa parks and sanatoria. The rebuilt old town lies a little inland on the river.
The harbour and the lighthouse mark the river mouth, and a pier reaches out into the sea from the promenade. Inland, the streets of the centre gather around the massive Gothic co-cathedral. A Kołobrzeg map poster shows how the town is layered from beach and parks to old centre and modern estates.
The town's early wealth came from salt, drawn from local brine springs, and those same waters later made it a health resort. Kołobrzeg was heavily damaged in 1945. In March of that year Polish soldiers held a symbolic wedding to the sea here, an event commemorated by a monument near the shore.

Spa district
Between the beach and the centre, a green band of parks, sanatoria and promenades follows the coastline. From above, it is one of the town's defining shapes.
Co-cathedral quarter
The old town clusters around the large brick Gothic basilica. Its streets were rebuilt after the war, and partly again in recent decades in a style that echoes the historic centre.
