Koppal is the headquarters of its district in northern Karnataka. It sits in the dry Deccan country, where boulder-strewn hills come up out of flat farmland. On a map the town looks tight and irregular. Older lanes cluster around the market areas, and newer roads run outward toward the fields. Rocky ridges push in close to the built-up edge, so blank patches of hillside interrupt the street pattern.
The town has a long past. Emperor Ashoka's minor rock edicts were found on the hills near Koppal, and a fort sits on the high ground above the streets. Neither makes much of a mark in linework, but they explain why the town hugs the rock the way it does. The ancient ruins of Hampi lie within a short drive to the south.
A Koppal map poster shows that contrast between dense streets and empty stone. Fine alleys crowd against open ground, and the main roads leave town in several directions across the plain. The composition is uneven in a good way. Built-up areas and hills pull against each other, and the poster reads as a place shaped by its geology.
Rocky outcrops press against the town and leave irregular blank shapes where streets cannot climb. The fine grid meets rough, open ground in clear contrast.
The core is a knot of narrow, closely spaced lanes. In print it becomes the darkest, most textured part of the poster, surrounded by more open development.
Main routes run straight out from town across the flat Deccan farmland, like spokes. They give the edges of the map a steady linear rhythm.

Koppal suits anyone with roots in northern Karnataka, or anyone who knows the road between the Deccan hills and Hampi. The poster is quiet and graphic, a record of a town fitted in among stone.
