Kora lies in the Western Province of Rwanda, in the high country between the volcanic north and the shores of Lake Kivu. This is a landscape of steep hills and deep valleys, heavily farmed, with small plots of land stepping down the slopes. Settlements here tend to be spread out rather than compact.
On a map, that shows as a network of roads and paths following ridges and valley floors, with houses scattered along them. There is little that looks like a grid. Instead, lines curve and branch as they adapt to the hills, which is typical of the countryside that gives Rwanda its nickname, the land of a thousand hills.
A Kora map poster is therefore an image of terrain as much as of settlement. The winding lines carry the character of the place, and the open spaces between them suggest the fields and slopes. It is a calm, organic print, very different from a city plan.
Roads and footpaths bend along ridges and around slopes, creating flowing, branching lines instead of straight streets.
Houses spread along the routes in a loose pattern, typical of rural Rwanda, so the map feels open rather than dense.
Lower ground between the hills carries streams and farmland, adding gentle lines that trace the course of the valleys.

Ko e hā ʻa Kora
For anyone born here, or who has worked or volunteered in the area, a map of Kora is a personal reminder of a very specific hillside world. It keeps the shape of the place present at home.
Personalise the title and subtitle, add a date or keep the coordinates line, and pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper gives the winding lines a warm, hand-drawn feel.
