Korçë sits on a fertile plateau in southeastern Albania, at around 850 metres, with the Morava mountains rising on its eastern side. The city has a clear, easy-to-read structure: a central boulevard leading to the cathedral, a restored old bazaar, and neighbourhoods of low houses with gardens behind walls. Its wide, straight streets make it feel more orderly than many towns in the region.
Korçë has long been a cultural centre. The first school teaching in the Albanian language opened here in 1887 and is now a museum, and the city is home to the National Museum of Medieval Art, with its large collection of icons. It is also known for its serenades, a local song tradition, and for the beer that carries the city's name.
