Krasnyy Sulin lies in the west of Rostov Oblast, in the steppe country of the eastern Donets coal basin. The town grew around heavy industry, and on the map this is plain: a large works site with rail sidings and long sheds takes up a substantial share of the urban area, while residential streets spread around it in regular blocks.
The metallurgical plant, founded in the late nineteenth century, gave the settlement its reason to exist, and the railway lines serving it still cut through the town. A small steppe river winds through the valley, its curves softening the straight lines of the industrial and residential districts, with open farmland and low hills extending beyond.
