Mountain-ringed basin
Forested ridges enclose the town on all sides, leaving the valley floor as a defined bowl. That gives the map a natural, almost circular frame.

Kumano is a town in Hiroshima Prefecture, set in a highland basin east of Hiroshima city. From above, the mountains frame everything. Steep forested slopes surround the town on every side, and the built-up area fills the flatter valley floor, with houses, roads and small rice fields fitting together in a compact pattern.
Kumano is famous across Japan for fude, calligraphy and cosmetic brushes. Brush-making spread here in the nineteenth century, and the town is now responsible for a large share of the brushes made in Japan, with a festival celebrating the craft each autumn. Small workshops are scattered through its residential streets rather than gathered in one district.
A Kumano map poster shows how clearly the land shapes the town. Roads follow the valley floor and then climb toward passes to Hiroshima and Kure. Rice terraces and orchards soften the edges where the plain meets the slopes. The contrast between the dense central streets and the empty forested hills is the core of the composition.
Forested ridges enclose the town on all sides, leaving the valley floor as a defined bowl. That gives the map a natural, almost circular frame.
Small rice fields fill the gaps between housing and roads. Their neat rectangular shapes add a fine, regular texture to the lower parts of the map.
Routes toward Hiroshima and Kure climb out of the basin in winding lines, showing how the town connects to the coast through the mountains.

Ko e hā ʻa Kumano
Kumano means something particular to people who make, collect or give fine brushes, and to anyone with family in the basin. A quiet map of the town sits well beside calligraphy, ink work or a craft studio.
