Kutum is a town in North Darfur, Sudan, in a region of semi-arid plains and low rocky hills. From above, its built-up area is compact, a network of streets and compounds that gives way quickly to open country crossed by tracks leading to surrounding villages.
Like many towns in Darfur, Kutum has long served as a local centre for trade and administration for a wide rural area. Seasonal watercourses, known as wadis, shape the land around it, filling after rains and otherwise showing as dry channels that still mark the map.
A Kutum map poster reflects this landscape with restraint. The dense core of the town, the thin lines of roads reaching outward and the sweep of empty terrain around it make a spare composition, where space itself is part of the design.
The settlement forms a tight cluster of streets and plots, clearly defined against the open land that surrounds it on every side.
Dry riverbeds wind through the surrounding country, carrying water only in the rainy season but visible on the map year-round.
Roads and tracks radiate across the plains, connecting Kutum with the rural communities it has long served as a market centre.
