La Louvière is a city in the province of Hainaut in Wallonia, in the old industrial region known as the Centre, between Mons and Charleroi. It is young by Belgian standards, becoming a separate municipality only in 1869, and it grew quickly around coal mines, ironworks and ceramics factories. On a map that history shows as a patchwork of districts joined by rail lines and waterways.
From above, water defines the city. The historic Canal du Centre, with its four hydraulic boat lifts from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A newer, wider canal passes the giant Strépy-Thieu boat lift on the edge of the municipality. Both waterways cut long, deliberate lines through the land, linking the Meuse and Scheldt basins.
A La Louvière map poster brings together the dense town centre, former industrial sites, the two canals and the villages absorbed into the municipality over time. The city is also known for its Laetare carnival and its place in Belgian surrealism. On paper, though, the engineering of the waterways gives the design its most memorable lines.
The historic canal and its four hydraulic boat lifts form a narrow, stepped waterway through the landscape, one of the most celebrated pieces of industrial heritage in Europe.
The modern canal and its enormous boat lift show on the map as a broad, straight channel, a bolder and more direct line than the older waterway nearby.
Former mines, factory sites, workers' housing and village centres form a varied quilt of street patterns, each district keeping its own scale and texture.

Ko e hā ʻa La Louvière
La Louvière means a great deal to people with roots in the Centre's mining and steel families, and to anyone who has followed the canals by bike or boat. A map of the city honours that working heritage in a calm, graphic way that suits a modern home.
