La Roche-sur-Yon Map Poster & Print
La Roche-sur-Yon is one of the few French towns planned from scratch. Napoleon made it the prefecture of the Vendée in 1804, and engineers drew a new town on the plateau above the river Yon. The result is still easy to see on a map: a pentagon of boulevards enclosing a regular grid of streets and squares.
At the centre is the large Place Napoléon, with the emperor's equestrian statue. Straight streets run out from it to the boulevards, and the town shows none of the tangled medieval core that most French prefectures have. The Yon runs along the western side in a green valley, a natural curve beside the geometric plan.
The town changed its name several times with the regimes of the nineteenth century, including a period as Napoléon-Vendée, before it settled on La Roche-sur-Yon. The river runs past the western side of the centre in a wooded valley. Its curving line is a counterpoint to the ruled streets on the plateau above.
