Lake Hallstatt, the Hallstätter See, lies in the Salzkammergut of Upper Austria, deep in a valley below the Dachstein massif. It is long and narrow and runs roughly north to south. Its shores rise so steeply that there is room to build in only a few places, so on a map the lake is a clean shape almost completely enclosed by slopes.
The village of Hallstatt clings to a narrow ledge on the western shore, its houses stacked between the water and the mountain, with the salt mine high above. Salt has been mined here for around 7,000 years, and the Iron Age Hallstatt culture of prehistoric Europe is named after finds made at the site. The area is part of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
Obertraun lies on flatter ground at the southern end. The Traun River flows in from the south and leaves at the northern tip toward Bad Goisern.
