Lake Sevan lies high in the mountains of Armenia, at around 1,900 metres, and it is the largest lake in the country and in the Caucasus region. On a map it divides into two unequal parts: a smaller basin to the northwest, known as Minor Sevan, and a wider, deeper-looking expanse to the southeast called Major Sevan.
Where the two basins meet, the Sevan peninsula reaches out from the western shore. It was once an island, but a fall in the water level during the Soviet period joined it to the land. The Sevanavank monastery stands on its high ground, a small but well-known landmark.
