Lakinsk stands on the Klyazma river in Vladimir Oblast, close to the main road between Moscow and Vladimir. The town is small and easy to read from above: the highway passes nearby, the river loops through open meadows, and between them lie residential streets, a factory district and blocks of apartment buildings typical of Soviet-era planning.
The settlement was originally known as Undol and grew up around a textile mill in the nineteenth century. Its present name honours a local revolutionary named Lakin. The industrial origin still shows in the map, where the mill grounds and the older workers' housing form the most compact part of the town, with later districts laid out more regularly around them.
A Lakinsk map poster draws much of its character from the Klyazma. The river bends and doubles back across the floodplain, leaving old channels and oxbow shapes, and those curves set off the straighter lines of the town and the highway. Large areas of forest around the edges remain as open space, giving the composition room to breathe.
The river meanders across a wide floodplain near the town, with looping channels and old oxbows that stand out as the most expressive lines on the sheet.
The former textile mill and the streets around it make up the historic core of Lakinsk, where the town's industrial beginnings are still visible in the plan.
The road between Moscow and Vladimir forms a long, straight boundary line, a clear contrast to the curving river and the scattered villages nearby.
