Lancaster is the seat of Fairfield County, southeast of Columbus. It lies where the flat farmland of central Ohio begins to give way to the hills of the Hocking region. The Hocking River runs past the town, and the original street grid is set out neatly on the valley floor, with newer areas spreading into the rising ground.
Just north of downtown, a sandstone outcrop called Mount Pleasant, also known as Standing Stone, rises above the town in Rising Park. It is a well-known local viewpoint. Lancaster is also the birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman, and it has long been known as the home of the Anchor Hocking glass company.

Rising Park
The park around the Mount Pleasant outcrop leaves an open green space north of downtown. The streets curve around its steep edges.

The river and its valley run past the town and add a natural curve that breaks the grid on one side.
