Lathrop lies in San Joaquin County, just south of Stockton, where Interstate 5 and State Route 120 meet. From above, the city has a split character: an older core and industrial parks east of the freeway, and to the west the San Joaquin River, which divides into channels around low, flat islands. Levees follow the waterways, and farmland fills the gaps.
In recent years one of those islands, the Stewart Tract, has become River Islands, a planned community with curving streets, lakes and parks, enclosed by levees. The city's position at the crossing of major road and rail routes has also made it a base for warehousing and manufacturing.
A Lathrop map poster shows how the rivers, levees and freeways shape the city. The water channels curve through the frame, the interstate cuts a straight line, and new neighbourhoods fill the land between. It is a clear, modern print of a city still growing on the Delta's edge.
The river and its branches wind around low islands on the west side, their levees drawing long, smooth curves across the map.
The new planned community on the Stewart Tract shows as looping streets and artificial lakes, enclosed within the surrounding waterways.
Interstate 5 and Route 120 cross near the city, with wide interchange curves that form a strong, geometric feature in the layout.
