Le Sud-Ouest is a borough of Montreal that runs southwest from downtown toward the St. Lawrence. The Lachine Canal is its main line. The waterway cuts straight through the borough, with its locks, basins and towpaths. On either side lie neighbourhoods such as Saint-Henri, Petite-Bourgogne, Pointe-Saint-Charles, Côte-Saint-Paul and Ville-Émard.
The street pattern shows the area's industrial past. Tight blocks of row housing sit beside large former factory sites. Rail corridors and highway ramps cut sharp angles through the grid. South of the canal, a second waterway, the aqueduct canal, adds another long line, and the borough reaches the river along its southern edge.
The Lachine Canal closed to shipping in 1970 and reopened for pleasure boating in 2002. Its banks are now lined with bike paths and converted warehouses, with Atwater Market beside the water. A Le Sud-Ouest map poster shows the canal, the neighbourhoods on both banks and the rail lines that shaped them.
The canal crosses the borough as a long, precise line with locks and turning basins. It is the backbone of the whole composition.
Saint-Henri and Pointe-Saint-Charles have compact blocks of narrow lots. Their dense texture contrasts with the wide footprints of former industrial sites.
Railway corridors and elevated roads slice diagonally through the street grid, creating sharp, graphic breaks.
