Leavenworth sits on the west bank of the Missouri River in northeast Kansas, and it is the oldest city in the state, founded in 1854. The downtown is a regular grid of streets on the rising ground above the river, and the river itself, sweeping past along the east side, is the dominant feature of the map.
Just north of the city lies Fort Leavenworth, established in 1827 and the oldest active United States Army post west of the Mississippi. Its grounds take up a large part of the map, with curving roads, open space and historic buildings set apart from the city's grid. The name is also closely associated with the federal penitentiary nearby.
