Lębork lies in northern Poland, in Pomerania, on the Łeba River and its tributaries. From above, the medieval old town is easy to pick out: a compact, roughly oval area of streets surrounded by later districts that spread outward in a more open pattern. The town was founded in the fourteenth century under the Teutonic Order, and parts of its old defensive walls and towers survive. It has been part of different states over the centuries and has been Polish since 1945. Today it is a regional centre for the area between Gdańsk and Słupsk.
