Lezhë lies in northwestern Albania, where the Drin reaches the coastal plain a few kilometres before the Adriatic. On a map, a steep hill rises on the eastern side of town, crowned by a castle, and the streets spread across the flat land below it. Toward the west the plain opens out to wetlands, lagoons and the coast at Shëngjin, while the main road north to Shkodër passes nearby.
The town has an important place in Albanian history. In 1444 Skanderbeg brought together the Albanian nobles here in the League of Lezhë, and his memorial stands within the ruined Church of Saint Nicholas in the centre of town, where he was buried. The castle above has foundations that date back to the ancient settlement of Lissus, one of the oldest in the region.

River and plain
The Drin and its channels cross the low ground toward the sea, and the fields and wetlands around them give the western side of the map a softer, open texture.
Historic centre
In the middle of town, streets gather around the ruined church that holds Skanderbeg's memorial, making the historic core a small but clear focus of the map.
