Lobito, on Angola's Atlantic coast, has one of the most unusual shapes of any port city in Africa. A long, narrow sand spit called the Restinga runs parallel to the coast and encloses a deep, sheltered bay. On the map, this thin strip of land, lined with streets and buildings, is the defining feature.
The port and the main commercial areas face the bay. Behind them, the mainland city spreads across flatter ground and up toward the low hills and escarpment inland. Roads link Lobito south to Benguela, its close neighbour along the coast.
Lobito is the Atlantic terminus of the Benguela Railway, which runs east across Angola toward the mining regions of the continent's interior. That corridor has made the port important well beyond its size. A Lobito map poster shows the spit, the bay and the city behind it as one clear, graphic composition.

The calm water between the spit and the mainland forms a natural harbour, and it appears as a long open shape through the middle of the print.
The port and the start of the Benguela Railway sit along the bay, where rail lines and quays make a dense cluster of straight lines.

Lobito's spit and bay make a naturally striking image, and for anyone with ties to Benguela province it is also a very personal one. It works especially well in tall formats.
