Longchi lies in the south-east of Chongqing municipality, in the Wuling mountain area close to the borders of Guizhou and Hunan. The town sits in a valley among steep, wooded karst hills, and its streets follow the level ground, with the main road running through the centre and smaller lanes branching toward the slopes. Terraced fields and scattered villages climb the surrounding hills.
This part of Chongqing is home to Tujia and Miao communities, and the landscape is typical of the Wuling range: tightly folded ridges, narrow valleys and roads that wind to follow the terrain. The name Longchi translates as dragon pool, a common and evocative place name in China.
