Lorient sits on the south coast of Brittany, where the Scorff and Blavet rivers flow into a wide, sheltered roadstead that opens to the Atlantic. On a map the city occupies the land between the rivers, bordered by water on several sides, with docks and harbours along the shore and the citadel of Port-Louis guarding the entrance opposite.
The city was founded in 1666 as a base for the French East India Company, which gave it its name, L'Orient. During the Second World War the Germans built a large submarine base at Keroman, and the city itself was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombing. Rebuilt afterwards, Lorient has a largely postwar centre and hosts the Festival Interceltique every August.
A Lorient map poster reveals a city defined by water: river estuaries, docks, fishing harbour and the long outline of the roadstead. The rebuilt centre's straighter streets contrast with the curving shore and the massive rectangular blocks of the former submarine base. Noir gives the harbour a strong nocturnal feeling, while Blueprint reflects the city's maritime and naval heritage.
The sheltered bay formed by the Scorff and Blavet estuaries fills the centre of the map, ringed by quays, marinas and small coastal towns.
The concrete submarine pens on the Keroman peninsula form massive rectangular shapes by the water, now part of a nautical district with museums and sailing facilities.
Across the harbour mouth, the bastioned fortification of Port-Louis sits on its peninsula, a clear geometric outline at the entrance to the roadstead.

Ko e hā ʻa Lorient
Lorient means many things: sailing, fishing, the navy, and each August the music of the Interceltic festival. A map of the city and its roadstead is a natural choice for Bretons, sailors and anyone who has spent a summer on this stretch of coast.
Add a title and subtitle, perhaps a boat's name or the year of a festival, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as instant HD files or a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
