Ko e mape
Los Mochis grew up around a sugar mill founded in the early twentieth century by the American businessman Benjamin Johnston, on land first shaped by a utopian colony project centred on nearby Topolobampo. That planning history is easy to see from above. The centre is a regular grid of wide streets, laid out on a flat plain surrounded by irrigated farmland in northern Sinaloa.
The city is best known as the western terminus of the Chihuahua al Pacífico railway, the line known as El Chepe that climbs through the Copper Canyon. On the map, rail tracks and highways lead east toward the mountains and south toward the port of Topolobampo. Cerro de la Memoria, a small hill on the edge of town, breaks the flat ground.
A Los Mochis map poster shows the discipline of a planned town: long, straight streets and blocks of equal size, softened only by the hill and a few diagonals. In black and white the grid looks almost like graph paper, with the surrounding fields providing a quieter frame. It is a strong image for a city that many travellers only pass through.
Straight streets cross at right angles across almost the whole centre, a clear sign of the city's origin as an organised agricultural settlement.
The hill at the edge of the city interrupts the flat plain, its contours and winding paths standing out against the regular blocks nearby.
Tracks of the Chihuahua al Pacífico line leave the city toward the Sierra Madre, marking the start of one of Mexico's best-known train journeys.
