Lucera rises on a low ridge at the edge of the Tavoliere delle Puglie, the wide agricultural plain of northern Apulia. From above, the historic centre forms a dense, rounded knot of narrow streets, while roads fan out in every direction across the flat farmland. To the west, set apart from the town, the outline of a vast fortress occupies its own hill.
The fortress walls, built under the Angevins around an earlier palace of Frederick II, enclose a remarkably large area. Frederick settled a Muslim community from Sicily here in the thirteenth century, a chapter that shaped the town for decades. Lucera also preserves a Roman amphitheatre from the Augustan period and a Gothic cathedral in the old centre.
