Luoping lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing Municipality, in the rugged country around the Three Gorges. The terrain decides everything here. On a map, the settlement follows the narrow valley floors, and roads wind in long switchbacks where the slopes allow. There is no room for a grid. Streets bend with the land.
This part of Chongqing is known for its deep valleys, terraced hillsides and the river gorges that cut through the ranges towards the Yangtze. Small towns like Luoping grew up where the flat ground was just wide enough to build on. Around them the land rises quickly into forest and farmland.
A Luoping map poster reads almost like a drawing of the landscape itself. The contours are implied by the curves of the roads, and the watercourses trace the lowest ground. It is a picture of how people settle in steep country, drawn from above in simple, clean lines.
The built area stretches along the valley floor, a narrow band of streets hemmed in by rising ground, giving the town an elongated rather than compact shape.
Roads leaving town loop and switch back as they climb, forming the winding patterns typical of the Chongqing uplands.
Streams follow the valley bottoms and help define the town's layout, running alongside the main road as it makes its way through the hills.
