Maâtkas is a commune in Tizi Ouzou province, in the hills of Kabylia. It is not a single compact town but a group of villages spread across ridges and slopes, connected by winding mountain roads. On a map, this creates a pattern of small clusters linked by curving lines, rather than one central grid.
The villages traditionally sit on high ground, and that shows in the map: dense knots of buildings along ridgelines, with valleys and slopes left open in between. The roads follow the terrain closely, doubling back on themselves where the hills are steep.
Maâtkas is widely known for its pottery, a Kabyle tradition of hand-built, painted clay work that has become associated with the name of the place. A Maâtkas map poster shows a similarly handmade structure: each village keeps its own form, held together by the roads that tie the community together.
Settlements cluster along the high ground, appearing on the map as dense knots of streets spread across the hills.
Roads loop and switch back between villages, drawing long curving lines that follow the shape of the terrain.
Valleys and hillsides between the villages remain largely unbuilt, giving the composition generous space and rhythm.

Ko e hā ʻa Maâtkas
For Kabyle families in Algeria and abroad, the name Maâtkas carries a strong sense of belonging. A map of its villages can hang as a reminder of where the family comes from.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the name of your village, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
