Ko e mape
Mabopane lies roughly 30 kilometres north-west of central Pretoria, within the City of Tshwane in Gauteng. On a map it forms a large area of planned residential streets, organised into sections that residents know by block letters, with schools, sports fields and churches set into the pattern. Neighbouring Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa extend the built-up area in several directions.
The township was developed during apartheid and was later incorporated into the Bophuthatswana homeland, before becoming part of South Africa again in 1994. That planning history shows in the layout: long, repeating rows of plots, open buffers between sections, and main roads designed to carry commuters south toward jobs in Pretoria.
Mabopane station is the terminus of a commuter rail line into Pretoria, and the long straight rail corridor defines one side of the township. A Mabopane map poster shows this carefully arranged pattern of streets, sections and open land, a record of a community that has made a planned grid its own over the decades.
The line from Pretoria ends at Mabopane station, drawing a long straight stroke across the map that has carried residents to work for decades.
The residential sections repeat in regular grids of small plots, each area set at a slightly different angle, giving the poster a rhythmic, patchwork quality.
Unbuilt strips and veld between neighbourhoods appear as blank spaces on the map, separating the blocks and marking where planned areas meet.

Mabopane is a map for people who grew up in its blocks, who ride the train to Pretoria, or who have moved away but still call it home. It shows a familiar place with the same care usually reserved for famous cities.
