Madison is one of the few American cities built on an isthmus. Lake Mendota lies to the north and Lake Monona to the south, and the land between them narrows sharply around the Capitol. The domed building sits on a square from which streets set off diagonally, overlaid on the regular grid, so the centre looks like a star pinned between two bodies of water.
From Capitol Square, State Street runs west to the University of Wisconsin campus, which wraps along the Mendota shoreline and climbs Bascom Hill. Farther along, Picnic Point stretches out into the lake. To the south-west, Lake Wingra and the university arboretum add another patch of water and woodland, and smaller lakes continue down the Yahara chain.
