Maesteg is the main town of the Llynfi Valley, north of Bridgend in South Wales. Like many valley towns, it grew quickly on iron and coal in the nineteenth century, and its shape comes straight from the landscape. It is a long, narrow settlement that follows the valley floor, with steep hills on either side.
On a map this makes one of the most characteristic patterns in Britain. Parallel rows of terraced housing run along the contours and step up the slopes in tidy lines. At the bottom of the valley the river, the main road and the railway to Bridgend run through the town together.
