Magog sits in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, at the northern end of Lake Memphremagog, a long, narrow lake that stretches south across the border into Vermont. From above, the town is shaped by water: the lake's broad northern bay, the Magog River leaving it and running through the center, and a smaller lake a little further downstream.
The main street runs close to the river and the lakefront, with residential neighborhoods spreading into the hills around it. To the west, the slopes of Mont Orford and its provincial park rise above the town, and in winter and summer the area draws visitors for skiing, cycling and time on the water. The town grew in part around a textile mill powered by the river.
