Mainland is the largest island of Orkney, off the north coast of Scotland. Its outline is complex, almost two islands joined together. A larger West Mainland and a narrower East Mainland meet at a slim isthmus where the town of Kirkwall stands. Around the island, sounds and bays open onto its neighbours, and to the south lies the wide, sheltered water of Scapa Flow.
The island holds some of the best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe. Skara Brae, Maeshowe, the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar make up the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, grouped around the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. In Kirkwall, St Magnus Cathedral, built of red and yellow sandstone, has stood since the twelfth century.
A Mainland map poster shows the island at a scale where both towns, Kirkwall and Stromness, are clear and the network of small roads spreads evenly across the farmland. The two great lochs in the west read as broad, pale shapes. The Churchill Barriers can be seen linking the east of the island southward toward South Ronaldsay.
Kirkwall sits where East and West Mainland narrow to a thin neck of land, with bays on either side. It has the island's largest street network and is a natural centre for the map.
Two large lochs in the west, separated by a narrow strip of land near the Ring of Brodgar, dominate the interior and give the map its most recognisable shapes.
Causeways built during the Second World War close the eastern approaches to Scapa Flow and link Mainland to smaller islands to the south. They appear as a chain of short, straight lines across the water.

Orkney gets under people's skin, whether through a summer spent walking among standing stones, a family line that runs back through the islands or a few years working in Kirkwall. A map of Mainland gathers those places onto one sheet, and it hangs well in a room where people will ask about it.
Title the poster Mainland, Orkney or something more personal, use the subtitle for a date and adjust the coordinates line. Noir and Blueprint suit the northern light, while Classic, Paper and Sand are softer. Printed matte posters, with an optional wooden frame, ship from partners in over 30 countries.
