Maliu lies in the northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the steep, folded hill country north of the Yangtze. Flat land is scarce in this part of China, so settlements tend to follow river valleys and lower slopes. On a map the town appears as a narrow band of streets along its valley. Roads curve away into the hills in long bends.
The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of terraced fields, woodland and small villages linked by winding roads. Much of northeastern Chongqing belongs to the wider Three Gorges region, where valleys drop steeply toward the Yangtze and its tributaries. The terrain shapes every settlement's plan more than any formal design.

Winding hill roads
Roads leave the town in curves and hairpin bends, climbing the surrounding slopes to reach outlying villages scattered across the hill country.
