Man lies in the far west of Ivory Coast, in a region locally known for its mountains, and the town is often described as the city of eighteen mountains. On a map its streets spread across the lower ground in an irregular, organic pattern, pressed in on several sides by high ground where the roads simply stop. The effect is of a settlement shaped by its landscape rather than by planning.
The best-known summit is the Dent de Man, a tooth-shaped peak that rises near the town, and a waterfall in the forest nearby is a regular stop for visitors. The Montagnes region is also the heart of Dan culture, well known for its masks and masked performances, so the town carries a strong regional identity.
