Mancherial is in northern Telangana, near the south bank of the Godavari River, and has been the headquarters of its own district since 2016. The river is one of the widest features on the map, a broad channel with sandbanks and a long bridge carrying traffic to the north.
The town grew up with the coal industry. The Singareni Collieries operate across this part of the Godavari valley, and the land around Mancherial shows it, with large mining areas, rail lines and colony townships laid out in regular blocks. The older commercial streets cluster around the railway station and the main road.
