Mandāwa lies in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, on the dry, sandy plains at the edge of the Thar Desert. From above, the old town is a dense, irregular web of narrow lanes, with larger rectangular compounds set among them. Those compounds are the havelis, the courtyard mansions for which Shekhawati is best known.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Marwari merchant families built these havelis and covered their walls with painted murals of gods, legends, trains and everyday scenes. Many of them survive, and they have made the town a destination for travellers interested in painted architecture. A fort, now converted into a hotel, stands near the heart of town.
A Mandāwa map poster brings out a structure that is hard to see at street level: the courtyards as open squares inside solid blocks, the lanes squeezing between high walls, and the town fading into sand and field at its edges. The plan is intricate without being chaotic, and it suits a fine, detailed print.
The merchant mansions are built around inner courtyards. On the map these show as small open rectangles within the dense blocks of the old town.
Narrow, winding streets thread between high walls and turn at sharp angles. Together they form a tight, irregular web typical of Shekhawati towns.
The built-up area ends quickly and gives way to sandy farmland and tracks. This makes the town's outline compact and easy to read against the open ground.

Ko e hā ʻa Mandāwa
Mandāwa is a place people remember for its colour, and seeing it in black and white is a quiet contrast: the painted walls reduced to the pattern of lanes and courtyards. It suits travellers who walked those streets and families with roots in Shekhawati.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, and add a date such as a trip or a family occasion. There are five styles to choose from: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand echoes the desert light.
