Ko e mape
Manjo is a town in the Moungo department of Cameroon's Littoral region, in hilly country north of Douala. On a map the settlement follows the main road that runs through it, with side streets branching off to reach housing on the surrounding slopes. The pattern is irregular and shaped by the ground, with no planned grid.
The Moungo area is known for its fertile volcanic soils and farming, and plantations and smallholdings fill much of the land around the town. Manjo works as a local centre for this agricultural area, and its markets and roadside businesses serve the nearby communities. The road that shapes the town also links it to the region's larger towns.
A Manjo map poster shows a town defined by one road and the landscape around it. The main route running through, the side streets climbing away from it and the open farmland beyond make a simple, organic composition. It is a personal piece for anyone with roots in the Moungo.
A principal road runs through Manjo and organises the town along its length. It is the strongest line on the poster.
Smaller streets leave the main road and wind up the nearby slopes, following the terrain rather than any regular plan.
Around the town the map opens into agricultural land, where tracks and paths link scattered homesteads and plantations.
